↔️ Timber Movement Calculator for Woodworking
Estimate seasonal width movement from moisture change and species coefficient.
This free tool helps you turn project measurements into a practical planning estimate. Enter values in Vaelden’s interactive calculator, review the result, and confirm important assumptions against supplier data, measurements, codes or qualified advice before committing materials or money.

How to calculate timber movement
Method: Movement = board width × moisture-content change × species/orientation coefficient
- Use board width across the grain.
- Estimate realistic seasonal moisture-content change.
- Use a coefficient appropriate to species and grain orientation.
Worked example
Using these planning inputs:
- Board or panel width: 600
- Expected moisture-content change: 4 % MC
- Movement coefficient per 1% MC: 0.25 % width
Estimated width movement: 6.00 mm
Reality check: This is a planning estimate. Quarter-sawn and flat-sawn boards behave differently, and real moisture gradients can cause cupping as well as width change.
Before you calculate
Use consistent units and the best measured inputs available. Real materials, equipment, site conditions and tolerances can change the result. Vaelden shows planning estimates; regulated, structural, electrical, plumbing, pressure and other safety-critical work still requires appropriate local compliance and professional advice.
