How to calculate cut list planner
Method: Purchase length = quantity × part length × waste allowance; stock pieces round up from available lengths
- Start from finished part dimensions and quantity.
- Add machining, defect, grain and selection allowance deliberately.
- Compare total length with real stock lengths and build a cutting layout before buying.
Worked example
Using these planning inputs:
- Number of identical parts: 12
- Finished part length: 450
- Available stock length: 2.4
- Waste / defect allowance: 12 %
Stock pieces required: 3
Reality check: A length total is not a cutting optimisation; kerf, end trimming, defects and required continuous lengths can increase stock count.
