How to calculate cut list planner

Method: Purchase length = quantity × part length × waste allowance; stock pieces round up from available lengths

  1. Start from finished part dimensions and quantity.
  2. Add machining, defect, grain and selection allowance deliberately.
  3. Compare total length with real stock lengths and build a cutting layout before buying.

Worked example

Using these planning inputs:

Stock pieces required: 3

Reality check: A length total is not a cutting optimisation; kerf, end trimming, defects and required continuous lengths can increase stock count.

Before you calculate

Use consistent units and the best measured inputs available. Real materials, equipment, site conditions and tolerances can change the result. Vaelden shows planning estimates; regulated, structural, electrical, plumbing, pressure and other safety-critical work still requires appropriate local compliance and professional advice.
