How to calculate sheet goods estimator
Method: Sheets = total part area ÷ sheet area ÷ layout efficiency, rounded up
- List every panel at finished size and quantity.
- Use actual usable sheet dimensions.
- Choose a realistic layout efficiency for kerf, grain direction, edge damage and nesting.
Worked example
Using these planning inputs:
- Part width: 400
- Part height: 600
- Required panels: 10
- Sheet width: 1200
- Sheet height: 2400
- Expected layout efficiency: 82 %

Reality check: Area-based sheet count cannot prove a valid nesting pattern; lay out parts before ordering, especially when grain direction matters.
