How to calculate timber cost planner
Method: Purchase cost = required length × waste allowance × supplier unit price
- Build the cut list from finished dimensions.
- Add machining, defect and grain-matching allowance before pricing.
- Compare purchase length with the supplier’s actual stock lengths.
Worked example
Using these planning inputs:
- Net required length: 24
- Waste allowance: 15 %
- Price per displayed length unit: 8.5 currency
- Tax / GST: 10 %

Reality check: Linear length does not optimise cuts or account for grade, moisture, width, thickness and usable defect-free yield.
