How to calculate timber cost planner

Method: Purchase cost = required length × waste allowance × supplier unit price

  1. Build the cut list from finished dimensions.
  2. Add machining, defect and grain-matching allowance before pricing.
  3. Compare purchase length with the supplier’s actual stock lengths.

Worked example

Using these planning inputs:

Estimated material cost: A$258.06

Reality check: Linear length does not optimise cuts or account for grade, moisture, width, thickness and usable defect-free yield.

Before you calculate

Use consistent units and the best measured inputs available. Real materials, equipment, site conditions and tolerances can change the result. Vaelden shows planning estimates; regulated, structural, electrical, plumbing, pressure and other safety-critical work still requires appropriate local compliance and professional advice.
