How to calculate finish coverage

Method: Finish volume = surface area × coats ÷ product coverage × waste allowance

  1. Measure every coated face and edge.
  2. Use the manufacturer’s coverage for the substrate and application method.
  3. Add coats and application loss before selecting container sizes.

Worked example

Using these planning inputs:

Finish required: 1.65 L

Reality check: End grain, porous timber, spraying and surface preparation can change consumption; follow product recoat and curing instructions.

Before you calculate

Use consistent units and the best measured inputs available. Real materials, equipment, site conditions and tolerances can change the result. Vaelden shows planning estimates; regulated, structural, electrical, plumbing, pressure and other safety-critical work still requires appropriate local compliance and professional advice.
