🪴 Soil Volume Calculator for Gardening
Estimate soil for beds, planters and top-ups.
This free tool helps you turn project measurements into a practical planning estimate. Enter values in Vaelden’s interactive calculator, review the result, and confirm important assumptions against supplier data, measurements, codes or qualified advice before committing materials or money.

How to calculate soil volume
Method: Soil volume = bed length × width × fill depth × settlement allowance
- Measure the internal filled dimensions of each bed.
- Use actual fill depth after allowing for existing material.
- Convert the result to the supplier’s bulk unit and confirm vehicle access.
Worked example
Using these planning inputs:
- Length: 3
- Width: 1.2
- Depth: 0.3
- Settlement / extra: 10 %
Soil required: 1188.00 L
Reality check: Bulk soil settles and moisture changes delivered mass. Avoid overfilling around trunks, stems and damp-sensitive structures.
Before you calculate
Use consistent units and the best measured inputs available. Real materials, equipment, site conditions and tolerances can change the result. Vaelden shows planning estimates; regulated, structural, electrical, plumbing, pressure and other safety-critical work still requires appropriate local compliance and professional advice.
