How to calculate compost amendment
Method: Compost volume = bed area × amended depth × compost proportion
- Measure the bed area.
- Choose the soil depth actually being amended.
- Use a proportion appropriate to mature compost quality, existing soil and crop.
Worked example
Using these planning inputs:

- Amended depth: 0.2
- Compost proportion: 20 %
Compost volume: 400.00 L
