How to calculate plant spacing
Method: Plant count = whole rows across width × whole plants along length
- Use mature plant spacing, not seedling size.
- Lay out whole rows within the bed width.
- Check edge clearance and whether staggered spacing suits the crop.
Worked example
Using these planning inputs:
- Bed length: 4
- Bed width: 1.2
- Plant spacing: 0.3
Approximate plants: 52
Reality check: Sun, airflow, access and cultivar habit may require wider spacing than a geometric maximum.
