How to calculate plant spacing

Method: Plant count = whole rows across width × whole plants along length

  1. Use mature plant spacing, not seedling size.
  2. Lay out whole rows within the bed width.
  3. Check edge clearance and whether staggered spacing suits the crop.

Worked example

Using these planning inputs:

Approximate plants: 52

Reality check: Sun, airflow, access and cultivar habit may require wider spacing than a geometric maximum.

Before you calculate

Use consistent units and the best measured inputs available. Real materials, equipment, site conditions and tolerances can change the result. Vaelden shows planning estimates; regulated, structural, electrical, plumbing, pressure and other safety-critical work still requires appropriate local compliance and professional advice.
