💧 Irrigation Runtime Calculator for Gardening
Estimate runtime from target water depth and flow.
This free tool helps you turn project measurements into a practical planning estimate. Enter values in Vaelden’s interactive calculator, review the result, and confirm important assumptions against supplier data, measurements, codes or qualified advice before committing materials or money.

How to calculate irrigation runtime
Method: Runtime = target water depth × area ÷ measured system flow
- Choose a target depth appropriate to soil, plants and weather.
- Measure real zone flow or use catch cans instead of relying only on emitter labels.
- Split runtime if runoff starts before the target depth is applied.
Worked example
Using these planning inputs:
- Irrigated area: 25
- Target water depth: 10 mm
- System flow: 12 L/min
Estimated runtime: 20.8 min
Reality check: Pressure, blockage, slope, wind and overlapping patterns affect uniformity. Check soil moisture after watering.
Before you calculate
Use consistent units and the best measured inputs available. Real materials, equipment, site conditions and tolerances can change the result. Vaelden shows planning estimates; regulated, structural, electrical, plumbing, pressure and other safety-critical work still requires appropriate local compliance and professional advice.
