How to calculate priming sugar
Method: Priming sugar follows beer volume × required additional CO₂ × sugar factor
- Use finished package volume, excluding losses.
- Estimate residual CO₂ from the highest stable beer temperature.
- Choose target carbonation and the actual sugar type.
Worked example
Using these planning inputs:
- Beer volume: 23
- Highest post-fermentation temperature: 20
- Target carbonation: 2.4 vol CO₂
- Sugar type: dextrose
Priming sugar: 133.4 g
Reality check: Over-priming can burst packages. Confirm fermentation is complete, mix evenly and use pressure-rated bottles or kegs.
