How to calculate priming sugar

Method: Priming sugar follows beer volume × required additional CO₂ × sugar factor

  1. Use finished package volume, excluding losses.
  2. Estimate residual CO₂ from the highest stable beer temperature.
  3. Choose target carbonation and the actual sugar type.

Worked example

Using these planning inputs:

Priming sugar: 133.4 g

Reality check: Over-priming can burst packages. Confirm fermentation is complete, mix evenly and use pressure-rated bottles or kegs.

Before you calculate

Use consistent units and the best measured inputs available. Real materials, equipment, site conditions and tolerances can change the result. Vaelden shows planning estimates; regulated, structural, electrical, plumbing, pressure and other safety-critical work still requires appropriate local compliance and professional advice.
