How to calculate spirit dilution
Method: Final volume = starting volume × starting ABV ÷ target ABV; water added = final − starting volume
- Measure starting volume and alcohol strength with suitable instruments.
- Set a lower target ABV.
- Calculate theoretical water addition, mix thoroughly and verify after temperature stabilises.
Worked example
Using these planning inputs:
- Starting volume: 10
- Starting ABV: 60 %
- Target ABV: 40 %
Water to add: 5.000 L
