How to calculate tank capacity

Method: Cylindrical tank capacity = π × radius² × usable height

  1. Measure internal tank diameter.
  2. Use usable water height between outlet dead space and overflow.
  3. Convert volume to litres and retain freeboard.

Worked example

Using these planning inputs:

Tank capacity: 6842.39 L

Reality check: Manufacturer-rated capacity is preferable; tank foundation, overflow, mosquito protection and potable-water requirements need compliant detailing.

Before you calculate

Use consistent units and the best measured inputs available. Real materials, equipment, site conditions and tolerances can change the result. Vaelden shows planning estimates; regulated, structural, electrical, plumbing, pressure and other safety-critical work still requires appropriate local compliance and professional advice.
