How to calculate drain fall

Method: Required fall = drain length × grade percentage

  1. Measure horizontal drain run.
  2. Use the grade required for the pipe size and application.
  3. Convert total fall into invert levels and check the whole route.

Worked example

Using these planning inputs:

Required fall: 0.240 m

Reality check: Drain sizing, ventilation, access, minimum cover and permitted grades are regulated; confirm with local rules and a qualified plumber.

Before you calculate

Use consistent units and the best measured inputs available. Real materials, equipment, site conditions and tolerances can change the result. Vaelden shows planning estimates; regulated, structural, electrical, plumbing, pressure and other safety-critical work still requires appropriate local compliance and professional advice.
