How to calculate water pressure head

Method: Static pressure = fluid density × gravity × vertical head

  1. Measure vertical water-level difference.
  2. Use fluid density appropriate to temperature and composition.
  3. Calculate static pressure before pipe and fitting losses.

Worked example

Using these planning inputs:

Static pressure: 98.1 kPa

Reality check: Available pressure under flow is lower because of friction and fittings; tanks, pumps and pressure vessels require appropriate safety design.

Before you calculate

Use consistent units and the best measured inputs available. Real materials, equipment, site conditions and tolerances can change the result. Vaelden shows planning estimates; regulated, structural, electrical, plumbing, pressure and other safety-critical work still requires appropriate local compliance and professional advice.
