How to calculate hot water energy
Method: Heating energy = water mass × specific heat × temperature rise ÷ system efficiency
- Use the heated water volume.
- Calculate temperature rise from inlet to target.
- Apply heater efficiency, then multiply electrical energy by tariff for cost.
Worked example
Using these planning inputs:
- Water volume: 150
- Starting temperature: 15
- Target temperature: 60
- System efficiency: 90 %
- Energy tariff: 0.3 currency/kWh
Energy required: 8.72 kWh
Reality check: Scald protection, storage temperature, legionella control, pressure relief and installation are safety-critical regulated matters.
