How to calculate hydrometer temperature
Method: Corrected gravity applies water-density factors at sample and calibration temperatures
- Record measured specific gravity.
- Record sample temperature and hydrometer calibration temperature.
- Apply the correction, preferably keeping samples close to calibration temperature.
Worked example
Using these planning inputs:
- Measured specific gravity: 1.05
- Sample temperature: 30
- Hydrometer calibration temperature: 20
Corrected gravity: 1.053
Reality check: Large temperature differences increase uncertainty and hot samples can damage hydrometers; cooling and direct measurement are preferable.
Method status and references
Approximate correction. The embedded water-density polynomial is a common brewing approximation, not a regulatory proof table. Cool the sample near the hydrometer calibration temperature for dependable work.
