How to calculate roofing sheets

Method: Sheets per plane = ceiling(roof width ÷ effective cover width)

  1. Measure roof width perpendicular to the sheet run.
  2. Use effective cover width after side laps, not overall sheet width.
  3. Confirm sheet length, end laps, overhangs and number of roof planes.

Worked example

Using these planning inputs:

Sheets required: 22

Reality check: Roof access, wind classifications, flashings, penetrations, condensation and fastening patterns require product-specific compliant design.

Before you calculate

Use consistent units and the best measured inputs available. Real materials, equipment, site conditions and tolerances can change the result. Vaelden shows planning estimates; regulated, structural, electrical, plumbing, pressure and other safety-critical work still requires appropriate local compliance and professional advice.
