How to calculate paint quantity
Method: Paint litres = area × coats ÷ coverage × extra allowance
- Measure the paintable surface and subtract only substantial openings.
- Use the product’s coverage for the actual surface and application method.
- Allow separate quantities for primer, ceilings, trim and strong colour changes.
Worked example
Using these planning inputs:
- Paintable area: 45
- Coats: 2
- Coverage per litre: 12 m²/L
- Extra: 10 %
Paint required: 8.25 L
Reality check: Porous repairs, textured walls and spraying can increase use. Keep one batch for the final coat where colour consistency matters.
Before you calculate
Use consistent units and the best measured inputs available. Real materials, equipment, site conditions and tolerances can change the result. Vaelden shows planning estimates; regulated, structural, electrical, plumbing, pressure and other safety-critical work still requires appropriate local compliance and professional advice.
