How to calculate plasterboard sheets
Method: Sheets = lining area × waste allowance ÷ sheet area, rounded up
- Measure each wall or ceiling plane separately.
- Choose sheet size and orientation to reduce joints while remaining safely handleable.
- Add waste for openings, offcuts, damaged edges and complex rooms.
Worked example
Using these planning inputs:
- Surface area: 55
- Sheet length: 2.4
- Sheet width: 1.2
- Waste: 10 %
Sheets required: 22
Reality check: Fire, acoustic, wet-area and structural systems require the specified board, fasteners, jointing and support details.
Before you calculate
Use consistent units and the best measured inputs available. Real materials, equipment, site conditions and tolerances can change the result. Vaelden shows planning estimates; regulated, structural, electrical, plumbing, pressure and other safety-critical work still requires appropriate local compliance and professional advice.
