How to calculate fence posts

Method: Bays = ceiling(fence length ÷ target spacing); posts = bays + end allowance

  1. Measure the actual fence alignment.
  2. Choose maximum bay spacing from the system and site conditions.
  3. Add corner, end, gate and level-change posts separately.

Worked example

Using these planning inputs:

Posts required: 15

Reality check: Wind exposure, soil, retaining loads, boundaries, services and permits can control footing and post design.

Before you calculate

Use consistent units and the best measured inputs available. Real materials, equipment, site conditions and tolerances can change the result. Vaelden shows planning estimates; regulated, structural, electrical, plumbing, pressure and other safety-critical work still requires appropriate local compliance and professional advice.
