How to calculate mortar volume

Method: Wet mortar volume = masonry area × mortar rate × waste allowance

  1. Measure masonry area by wall type.
  2. Use a mortar-consumption rate suited to the unit size and joint profile.
  3. Add allowance for droppings and mixing losses.

Worked example

Using these planning inputs:

Wet mortar volume: 550.00 L

Reality check: Mortar class, sand grading, exposure, batching and curing must suit the masonry system and local specification.

Before you calculate

Use consistent units and the best measured inputs available. Real materials, equipment, site conditions and tolerances can change the result. Vaelden shows planning estimates; regulated, structural, electrical, plumbing, pressure and other safety-critical work still requires appropriate local compliance and professional advice.
