How to calculate concrete blocks

Method: Blocks = net wall area ÷ nominal block face area × waste allowance

  1. Calculate wall area and subtract measured openings.
  2. Use the manufacturer’s nominal module including mortar joints.
  3. Schedule bond beams, lintels, corners and special units separately.

Worked example

Using these planning inputs:

Blocks required: 169

Reality check: Block count does not establish structural adequacy; reinforcement, grout, joints, support and weatherproofing need suitable design.

Before you calculate

Use consistent units and the best measured inputs available. Real materials, equipment, site conditions and tolerances can change the result. Vaelden shows planning estimates; regulated, structural, electrical, plumbing, pressure and other safety-critical work still requires appropriate local compliance and professional advice.
