How to calculate solar ev charging
Method: Solar charging hours = battery energy added ÷ charging efficiency ÷ available solar power
- Use usable vehicle battery capacity and the intended change in state of charge.
- Allow for charger and vehicle conversion losses.
- Use realistic surplus solar power after household loads, not array nameplate power.
Worked example
Using these planning inputs:
- Vehicle usable battery: 75 kWh
- Starting charge: 30 %
- Target charge: 80 %
- Available solar power: 4.5 kW
- Charging efficiency: 88 %
Solar charging time: 9.5 h
Reality check: Cloud, thermal limits, charger control and changing household loads mean the available solar rate rarely stays constant.
