How to calculate emissions avoided
Method: Avoided emissions = generation × displaced share × grid emissions factor
- Use expected or metered annual generation.
- Apply a credible grid emissions factor for the location and reporting period.
- Reduce the claim where generation does not actually displace grid supply.
Worked example
Using these planning inputs:
- Annual solar generation: 9000 kWh
- User-supplied grid emissions factor: 0.65 kg CO₂e/kWh
- Generation displacing grid: 80 %
Estimated emissions avoided: 4680 kg
Reality check: This is an operational estimate, not a lifecycle assessment; panel manufacture, transport, replacement and changing grid intensity are excluded.
Method status and references
