How to calculate backup load budget

Method: Backup energy = watts ÷ 1000 × hours per day × days × loss allowance

  1. List critical loads individually and estimate their realistic duty cycles.
  2. Multiply combined average power by required backup duration.
  3. Add conversion losses and a deliberate operating reserve.

Worked example

Using these planning inputs:

Backup energy target: 16.13 kWh

Reality check: Energy capacity alone is insufficient; confirm instantaneous power and startup surge for every critical appliance.

Before you calculate

Use consistent units and the best measured inputs available. Real materials, equipment, site conditions and tolerances can change the result. Vaelden shows planning estimates; regulated, structural, electrical, plumbing, pressure and other safety-critical work still requires appropriate local compliance and professional advice.
