How to calculate electrical power
Method: Single-phase real power = RMS voltage × RMS current × power factor
- Use RMS voltage and current for the same operating condition.
- Obtain power factor from measurement or reliable equipment data.
- Keep real power and apparent power distinct.
Worked example
Using these planning inputs:
- RMS voltage: 230 V
- RMS current: 5 A
- Power factor: 0.9
Real power: 1035.00 W
